APPLICATIONS
An Iranian customer required an automatic multi-lane packaging solution for several instant beverage powders and a small-dose natural sweetener.
The products included:
20g Karak tea powder
20g matcha latte powder
20g cappuccino powder
3g natural sweetener powder
The project involved two sets of SF-520 five-lane back-seal stick pack packaging machines. Although both machines use the same five-lane packaging principle, each one was configured for a different filling weight, stick size and film width.
The 3g product uses a narrow 25 × 120mm stick pack, while the 20g beverage powders use a larger 40 × 160mm stick pack. Separate machine configurations avoid frequent replacement of film-splitting, forming and sealing components when switching between two substantially different package sizes.
During factory testing, each machine reached an actual operating speed of 30 cuts per minute. With five lanes operating simultaneously, the output of each machine was approximately 150 sticks per minute.

The project included two machines, providing a combined theoretical output of approximately:
2 machines × 5 lanes × 30 cuts/min = 300 sticks/min
Actual output may vary according to powder characteristics, filling weight, film performance, sealing temperature and operating conditions.
The customer needed to produce both narrow 3g sweetener sticks and larger 20g beverage powder sticks. These two formats differ considerably in stick width, stick length, filling volume and total film width.
The customized solution therefore uses:
One five-lane machine with 300mm film width for 3g sticks
One five-lane machine with 450mm film width for 20g sticks
This configuration provides several production advantages:
Dedicated forming dimensions for each stick size
Faster product changeover
Reduced mechanical adjustment
Less production downtime
More stable film tracking and sealing
Simultaneous production of different product categories
Lower risk of incorrect size components being installed
It also allows the customer to manufacture natural sweetener and instant beverage products independently according to market demand.
Natural sweetener and instant beverage powders cannot be handled effectively by a liquid pump or volumetric cup. Their bulk density, flowability and tendency to generate dust require a controlled powder-dosing system.
Both machines use a servo-driven short-auger filling system. According to the production requirements, the discharge section also includes vibration assistance to improve powder feeding and settling.
The servo auger system provides:
Precise control of auger rotation
Independent adjustment of dosing parameters
Stable filling for both 3g and 20g products
Improved filling repeatability
Reduced product giveaway
Easier weight adjustment through the touchscreen
Accurate synchronization with all five packaging lanes
The filling parameters can be stored and adjusted according to the characteristics of Karak tea, matcha latte, cappuccino and natural sweetener powder.
Although all four products are powders, their packaging behavior may differ significantly.
Karak tea mixtures may contain tea powder, milk powder, sugar, spices and flavouring ingredients. Differences in particle size can lead to segregation or inconsistent flow during production.
Matcha latte blends usually contain fine matcha tea powder and milk-based ingredients. The powder can generate dust and adhere to film or stainless-steel surfaces.
Cappuccino mixtures may contain instant coffee, creamer, sugar and foaming ingredients. Their bulk density and flowability can change depending on formulation and environmental humidity.
At only 3g per stick, the natural sweetener requires controlled low-dose filling. Small variations in auger rotation can have a greater proportional effect on the final net weight.
For these reasons, the machines were equipped with servo auger dosing, vibration assistance and dedicated powder-control devices.
Fine beverage and sweetener powders can become airborne during high-speed multi-lane filling. Powder entering the sealing area may affect seal strength, create leakage or reduce the appearance quality of the finished sticks.
The customized machines include:
Dedicated dust-extraction equipment
Anti-static device
Vibration device
Enclosed filling and sealing area
Powder-contact components designed for easy cleaning
Material-level monitoring and control
The dust-extraction system helps remove airborne particles around the dosing and filling zones. Anti-static treatment reduces powder adhesion to packaging film and machine surfaces, while vibration assists powder discharge and settling inside the sticks.
The two machines were designed for separate package formats.
Stick width: 25mm
Stick length: 120mm
Total film width: 300mm
Five-lane configuration
Back-sealed stick format
Straight cutting with a fully opened tear section according to the order specification
Stick width: 40mm
Stick length: 160mm
Total film width: 450mm
Five-lane configuration
Back-sealed stick format
Straight cutting with an approximately 2cm opening section according to the order specification
The customer planned to supply laminated film for machine testing. The production order specified a film thickness of approximately 9–10 silk, subject to confirmation through actual film and product testing.
Both packaging machines use a straight-cutting system with an easy-tear opening.
The tear-opening configuration differs according to the two stick formats:
The 3g natural sweetener sticks require a fully opened tear section
The 20g beverage powder sticks require an approximately 2cm opening section
This customized cutting arrangement makes the single-serving sticks easier for consumers to open while maintaining a clean finished appearance.
Final sealing dimensions and cutting details are confirmed according to the customer’s laminated film, artwork layout and sample-stick requirements.
The production order specifies a Siemens-based control system for reliable industrial operation.
The control system coordinates:
Film feeding
Servo auger dosing
Five-lane product discharge
Stick-length control
Vertical back sealing
Horizontal sealing
Cutting
Temperature control
Safety interlocks
Material-level monitoring
The touchscreen supports both English and Chinese, making machine commissioning, operator training and after-sales support more convenient.
Operators can adjust major production parameters, including:
Target filling weight
Auger rotation
Packaging speed
Stick length
Sealing temperature
Film-feeding position
Cutting position
Vibration timing
Dust-extraction settings
The machine frame is made from 304 stainless steel, providing good corrosion resistance and easier daily cleaning for food and beverage powder production.
The overall design includes:
Stainless-steel frame and exterior panels
Enclosed transparent safety doors
Accessible product-contact components
Removable parts for easier cleaning
Space reserved for customer wiring requirements
Maintenance access platform and safety handrails
The production order also required the product hopper and related parts to be easy to clean, making product replacement between Karak tea, matcha latte and cappuccino more convenient.
The machines were designed with several operational and safety functions:
Emergency-stop and safety switches
Automatic stop when a safety door is opened
Three-colour production status indicator
Material-level monitoring
Enclosed moving components
Maintenance platform and access ladder
Touchscreen parameter control
When a safety door is opened, the machine stops automatically to reduce operator exposure to moving components.
The three-colour indicator enables operators to identify machine status, warnings and production interruptions more quickly.
The specified maximum nonconformity rate was 3 sticks per 1,000 finished sticks, equivalent to 0.3% under the agreed inspection conditions.
Before delivery, each machine was tested for:
Filling-weight consistency
Five-lane dosing synchronization
Stick width and length
Back-seal alignment
Horizontal-seal quality
Film tracking
Cutting accuracy
Easy-tear opening performance
Powder leakage
Dust-control performance
Continuous running stability
Safety-door interlock function
Finished-stick appearance
During factory commissioning, each machine achieved an actual operating speed of:
30 cuts per minute
Because every machine operates with five packaging lanes:
5 lanes × 30 cuts/min = approximately 150 sticks/min per machine
With two machines running simultaneously:
150 sticks/min × 2 machines = approximately 300 sticks/min
Estimated output at continuous rated operation:
| Production period | One machine | Two machines |
|---|---|---|
| Per minute | Approx. 150 sticks | Approx. 300 sticks |
| Per hour | Approx. 9,000 sticks | Approx. 18,000 sticks |
| Per 8-hour shift | Approx. 72,000 sticks | Approx. 144,000 sticks |
These figures are calculated capacities before deducting film replacement, cleaning, product changeover, parameter adjustment and other production downtime.
